Rob Thompson was born and brought up in Gosport. After attending local schools, he went on to study at Canford School in Dorset, and then to take History and Economics at Lincoln College, Oxford. This left him with a lifelong interest in economic history, and the lessons it can teach to this day about good government and public policy.
After graduating from University, Rob became a fund manager in the City of London, before leaving for China in 2000 to broaden his horizons and gain greater understanding of business in Asia and global trade. He studied Mandarin Chinese at Yunnan Normal University and then started his own company offering QC, sourcing and consulting services for those wishing to do business in, and buy products from Asia.
After ten years in China, and three in Singapore, he returned home to Gosport in 2013 to settle with his family. He has enjoyed the opportunity to play a role in the local community and the Conservative Association. He is currently Chairman of the Southern Wards Branch, Chairman of the Gosport Conservative Luncheon Club, and an officer of the Association, in the role of Deputy Chairman (Political).
