Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, hosted a public meeting with Southern Water last night, attended by over 100 constituents to discuss local concerns about water quality and other issues.

Constituents from Gosport, Lee on the Solent, Stubbington and Hill Head took part in an online meeting on Thursday 4 November where they heard from Southern Water CEO, Ian McAulay and had their questions answered.

Following of the meeting Caroline said:

“Understandably my mailbag has been full of concerned constituents raising questions about our water quality, particularly since the Environment Bill hit the headlines. As someone who regularly enjoys a swim at our local beaches, I fully understand and share people’s worries and have consistently pushed for improvements.

This meeting was really useful to start a dialogue between Southern Water and concerned constituents. It was fantastic to see it so well attended with lots of questions being asked.”

Gosport resident Mr F said:

“Thank you to Caroline Dinenage MP for organising a meeting with Southern Water, which I understand was the first of its kind amongst local coastal MPs.

I felt reassured by Southern Water that they continue to keep our coastal waters clean, and am pleased that they want to work with residents to ensure we have the best possible water quality for our marine and leisure shores.”

Ian McAualy, Chief Executive of Southern Water said:

“Protecting our rivers, beaches and coasts is important to us all and is an emotive issue. All 83 of our bathing waters meet strict European standards, a challenge which 20 years ago seemed impossible, but was delivered.

Now we want to take the next steps, further improving bathing water quality and extending the same standards to our region’s rivers.”
