Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, has welcomed a green paper on a new modern Industrial Strategy, which will support businesses across the country to grow and create more high skilled, high paid jobs for local people.
While the UK starts from a position of strength, being the 5th biggest economy in the world with the highest employment in our history. However, the Government argues that is vital that we build on our strengths in order to extend excellence into the future and ensure more people from the UK are able to share in wealth and prosperity. This is deemed particularly pressing following the vote to leave the EU as Britain seeks to plan a long-term outward looking future.
The Industrial Strategy outlines ten ‘pillars’ that underpin a new approach and will identify all of the new opportunities across the UK economy:
- Investing in science, research and innovation
- Developing skills
- Upgrading infrastructure
- Supporting businesses to start and grow
- Improving procurement
- Encouraging trade and inward investment
- Delivering affordable energy and clean growth
- Cultivating world-leading sectors
- Driving growth across the whole country
- Creating the right institutions to bring together sectors and places.
Commenting, Caroline said:
“This is an important step in building a modern, dynamic Industrial Strategy that will deliver more high skilled, high wage jobs and improve living standards and drive economic growth across the country. I am pleased that local businesses and workers have the chance to contribute to this vision and submit their views. I would encourage local people to get their voices heard in helping the Government develop a strategy for creating a high-skilled economy where businesses can grow and more jobs are created.”
