The Olympic Torch is coming to Gosport as locals prepare to be part of one of Britain’s biggest ever celebrations.
Local MP Caroline Dinenage, who has long campaigned for Gosport to be included on the route, has welcomed the decision by the International Olympic Committee. Following a campaign launched by Caroline in May, the IOC has announced that the torch will pass through Gosport on 15th July 2012.
Caroline said:
“The 2012 Olympics is set to be one of our country’s great historic moments. I am delighted that the campaign to bring the Olympic Torch to Gosport has paid off, so that all of my constituents can share in this epic event”.
“It will be a chance not just to celebrate the Olympics, but also all that is great about Gosport”.
Following the announcement in May this year that the Olympic Torch would visit Hampshire, Caroline Dinenage lobbied the IOC to ensure that Gosport was included on the route.
The route in the South-East announced today will also take in places such as East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, Bletchley Park and Winchester. The Olympic Flame is set to visit every county in the South East so that 95% of the population are within an hour’s journey time of the route.
