Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has welcomed the recent lifeline given to one of Gosport's most popular social clubs.
Earlier this year, members of Bridgemary's Iona Club received the upsetting news that their club was to close owing to its poor state of repair. Since then, Caroline has been in regular contact with the club's committee and the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth which owns the building, helping the two parties to reach a mutual agreement. This week, it was announced that the Diocese will work with the Iona Club on proposals to allow it to reopen.
Following the announcement, Caroline said:
"I am delighted to hear that the Iona Club's committee and the Catholic Church have agreed to work together to ensure that this community hub can continue to thrive. With over 1100 names on the petition to keep the club open, it is clear that this social club is extremely important to Bridgemary's residents.
The club's committee has done a fantastic job of mustering local support and I am pleased to have played a small role in securing this vital lifeline for their future"
Whilst no final decision has been made, it is hoped that the Church may offer the club a long-term lease of the land and building or give them the opportunity to buy the site.
