Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage today welcomed the extra funding schools in our area are set to receive through the Pupil Premium.
The Government recently announced that it will be increasing the amount it is providing for disadvantaged pupils in England this year to £488 per pupil, with schools in Gosport sharing just over £1.1 million.
Schools will be free to use this extra funding to raise the attainment of pupils in whatever way headteachers and governing bodies believes works best. This could be through one-to-one tuition, additional support in the classroom or extra classes for students who are falling behind.
Caroline said, "Enabling children from disadvantaged backgrounds to have the best possible start in life was a key Conservative pledge going into the last general election. The Pupil Premium delivers on this - by providing schools with £488 for every disadvantaged child on top of existing pupil funding."
Children from low income families generally do not achieve as well as those from more privileged backgrounds. The Premium will seek to address this attainment gap and will support pupils in reaching their potential.
Caroline added, "By supporting some of the most disadvantaged children in Gosport, we can help whole classes work together better and move forward faster. This is great news for children, parents and teachers alike."
