Local MP, Caroline Dinenage, is hoping to commemorate the role that the Gosport Constituency and its residents played in WWII on the 75th anniversary of VE Day on May 8th.
Due to the outbreak of Covid-19, unfortunately many of the planned local and national celebrations have been put on hold. The Lee-on-the-Solent event is now taking place via Facebook Live from 2.45pm with exciting performances from Winston Churchill actor ‘Steve McTique’ to give the famous Churchill speech and various 1940’s singers to perform favourite wartime songs and much more!
The Government, having cancelled its May Day parade and St. James Park Street Party, has provided a ‘get involved’ page with information on how to plan a VE day party and printable window posters and activity sheets for all the family. Dan Snow has also encouraged everyone to get creative with his VE Day Challenge.
To honour the role that Gosport and Lee on the Solent played in WWII, from the sacrifices made at home and abroad to the vital military role the peninsula fulfilled, Caroline has teamed up with the Gosport Society to post images and information showcasing the area’s history.
From Sunday 2nd May to Friday 8th May, a picture will be posted a day, from child evacuees, to bombing damage and street parties, with information provided by the Gosport Society.
Caroline commented:
“Just because we are staying at home for the sake of our community, does not mean that we cannot commemorate the sacrifices that were made for our peace and liberty. I know that this is a particularly tough time for everyone but if anything, these photos only highlight our proud history of being able to come together and support each other during troubled times.
“The Gosport Society have been brilliant at sourcing local information and showcasing our important war role in WWII.”
