Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage has been visiting Thorngate Churcher Trust to mark the 25th anniversary of its care home – Russell Churcher Court.
The MP, who is Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care, joined residents, staff and trustees on a visit to the charity which also celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.
Caroline had the opportunity to meet residents of the 44-bed care home and the sheltered flats provided by Thorngate Churcher Trust.
"There is obviously a great sense of community here," Caroline said. "I've had the opportunity today to see the wide range of residential care offered by Thorngate from the sheltered flats which enable residents to retain their independence but with great support through to the residential care in Russell Churcher Court."
Caroline said she had been impressed with the sense of community and the fact that residents are both happy and secure in such an environment.
She particularly praised the concept of the latest flats which opened earlier this year providing 10 purpose-built homes around an enclosed atrium and with a dedicated lounge for residents.
"It is these kind of developments which greatly encourage social interaction and combat loneliness and isolation – this is a great development," she said.
Thorngate chief executive Anne Taylor showed Caroline around the facilities and said it has been a great opportunity to showcase the facilities in Gosport which employ around 80 local people.
"2018 is an important year for the Trust as it celebrates 150 years and the 25th anniversary of Russell Churcher Court," said Anne. "In her Ministerial role, Caroline is very aware of the challenges facing the social care sector and we really appreciated her time in meeting the residents, staff and trustees and seeing first-hand the high quality facilities and care we provide for Gosport residents."
Thorngate Churcher Trust is a modern charitable registered social landlord, offering independent assisted living and residential care from three sites in Gosport, Hampshire.
It operates 122 sheltered flats for assisted living, all with 24 hour warden support, and a 44 bed care home offering residential care for older people including those living with dementia.
